Best Way to Acquire New Academic Vocabulary
Many students wonder how they can
learn academic vocabularies quickly. Academic vocabularies seem to be hard for
students to learn because they are multisyllabic and abstract. Some people
complaint about they had difficult time trying to remember academic
vocabularies and sometimes they feel disappointed since they cannot afford to
learn it. Therefore, if you want to success in learning academic vocabularies,
you should try to learn these following steps.
The first is to do not list a group
of separated academic vocabularies. If you learn academic vocabularies without
contexts, you won’t attain best results because it can also take a short time
for you to remember them, but you will not be able to keep it in your mind
longer. In contrast, through reading academic essays, academic reports, or an
excerpt from context textbooks, you will pay attention much more how they can
be used in different situations. Consequently, you will easily remember them
for a long time.
Determining to study deliberately
is also a necessary thing. You should also ask yourself if you want to learn
and how you spend time for it? Never forget to study regularly the number of
academic vocabularies every day and take time to build these vocabularies into
different sentences because it is also a best important way to learn
vocabularies quickly and effectively. Moreover, you should also need to
frequently discuss in group with others and write essays with academic topics
so that you can have opportunities to know more about academic vocabularies.
The last important thing is making
a link between studying academic vocabularies and listening. That is not a
perfect way if you just study them without listening. Both reading and listening
are two positive sides in learning vocabularies. Therefore, spending time on
listening to radio or some English programs is the method that helps increase
your academic vocabularies and makes them stronger.
Everyone has different study style.
There are a lot of ways that you can choose to make your study skills improve.
The only thing you must do is to get motivation and effort to complete it. You
will be successful!
Thank you, Sr. Trang, for your insights. I like the idea of studying words in context, and practicing them in authentic speech/writing. Of course, motivation is a big factor, too! Good luck with everything!
ReplyDeleteI also think that having been motivated and practise a lot is the best way to improve my vocabulary skills. I like your thought of linking studying vocabulary and listening, because I have an embarrassing experience related to this. One day teacher made me read a book and I started to read. As I read the book, I realised that with some words, I knew the meaning of that word, but didn't know how to speak. So I kept buffering and that was really embarrassing experience for me. Thanks for sharing your idea, St. Trang.
