Similarities and difference between writing essays in English and Chinese

Hello everyone. My name is James and I am from China. English and Chinese both are widespread used in the world. Today I am willing to talk with you about the difference and similarity between writing essays in English and Chinese.

I would like to talk about the differences between Chinese essays and English essays first, which could caused by the cultural difference between Chinese and western and different mode of thinking. One of the main differences is that writing Chinese essays will more focus on “description of surroundings” which will connect with the mood of author. However, English essays would have a brief description around environment. Second, Chinese essays will use relative unobjectionable ways to narrate things while English essays would use a more straightforward way to express their opinions and thoughts.

However, there are still some similarities between writing essays in English and Chinese. First of all, both of them have thesis statement or main idea in argumentative essays and a good essay must have convincing evident or data to support the thesis statement and explanations must be in a logical and rigorous way.

In a word, although Chinese essays and English essays have slightly differences, writing a good article both needs specific points and explicit explanations. We can learn from different style of writing in order to come out a good article.

  2. James,
I appreciate you to share the information about writing essay! China, next to Korea, is very similar but distinct with Korea. I knew that Chinese think that the description of surroundings is very important. That's why there are a number of metaphorical expression. So do Korean. We always talk or write indirectly. That is why I am struggling with writing an essay. Also, I think that the clarity of structure and argument is always crucial in terms of essay.
    Thank you!

  3. Hi James!
Your blog post was both interesting and a little surprising to me. Because although China and Sweden are two countries located far from each other, we seem to have things in common. I recognize the differences that you mention in your post and I have also noticed that there is a different way of thinking in the American essays. I also find it interesting that you mention how they describe things like the surrounding!

  4. Hello James, I really enjoyed reading your blogger about similarities and differences between the United States and China. In my language, we use the same thing in writing as your language. Most of our writing focus on "description of surroundings". While here in the United States people are focusing even on small details to make their subject concept, but as you said, we must learn other ways to connect our ideas well. Thank you so much for sharing your idea it was really helpful.

  5. Hello James,
I found really interesting how culture can affect even writing essays! In my case, Peruvians colleges use the same format for writing it as the U.S, but the difference is that here, in the U.S., the idea of citation and plagiarism is way stricter. Thanks for expressing some facts from your country.
